The Bicentennial of the Independence of Mexico was a group of festivities that took place in Mexico in 2010. These celebrated 200 years of the beginning of Independence and 100 years of the Revolution. The official days of the celebrations were  the 15th and 16th of September of the same year, although numerous previous events were carried out prior to those dates throughout Mexico.

This is what the official site of the Mexican government stated:
“In 2010 Mexico will commemorate 200 years of the beginning of Independence and 100 years of the beginning of the Revolution. For this reason, the Organizing Commission of these celebrations has designed and will carry out a great number of events so that all Mexicans know their past and its reflection on their present. It is not simply a celebration to remember that date, but to revive the values and ideals that gave sustenance to Mexico as a nation. To contribute, and therefore,  give a sense of contemporaneity to our history and update its meaning. This is our objective ”.

In this same tone, The Organizing Committee of the Bicentennial, carried out  a meticulous study of the document / painting Battle of Cinco de Mayo by Patricio Ramos Ortega.  This study was published on the official website of the Bicentennial Commemoration. No other historical object had that privilege.

One must not forget that the festivities were related to the Independence and Revolution of Mexico, and not to the Battle of May 5. This being key to appreciate the importance they gave to this piece.
