5 de Mayo, or May 5th, is the date when we commemorate the victory of  Mexican troops over the world renowned French army near the city of Puebla, Mexico in 1862.

This website is dedicated to the most significant historical artifact related to that battle, which is at the same time, Mexico’s most important military painting.

Cinco de Mayo and it’s Importance for the United States: To begin we make an effort to explain the significance of the Cinco de Mayo Battle and why it is greatly celebrated in the United States. Today Cinco de Mayo is widely regarded as the day when Latino Community  celebrates it’s identity and contributions to that nation.

An Historical Document: Furthermore, we examine in detail, why we should refer to this piece as an historical document and not as a painting.

About Patricio Ramos Ortega: We investigate who the author of the piece was,  and what circumstances led him to participate in the battle as a soldier defending his nation against the invaders.

Bicentennial Festivities of the Independence o Mexico 2010: We also address the fact that this piece was studied meticulously by The Organizing Committee of the Bicentennial Festivities of the Independence of Mexico 2010. We assess the importance of that investigation, and point out that no other historical artifact deserved that privilege.

Mexican Military Paintings in the 19th Century: Finally, we point out that this piece was published in the Book “Mexican Military Paintings in the 19th Century” by scholar Eduardo Baez and edited by the Ministry of National Defense. This historical document/painting  is the only one in the entire book that is photographed twice.
