BOOK: MEXICAN MILITARY PAINTINGS IN THE 19TH CENTURY
BY EDUARDO BAEZ. EDITED BY THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DEFENSE

La Batalla del Cinco de Mayo by Patricio Ramos Ortega is photographed on Pages 108 and 109. It is the only piece in the entire book that is photographed twice and is referred to as from a private collection.

«An artist from Puebla, Patricio Ramos Ortega, painted the battle of May 5th several times. So far we know at least seven oil paintings alluding to this topic: three in the Museum of the Casa del Alfeñique de Puebla, two in the Regional Center of the National Institute of Anthropology and History of the same city, another in the National Museum of History of Chapultepec and one more, from private collection … Of all, the best preserved seems to be the one that comes from a private collection … From the same canvas we get interesting point from the painter, in an inscription that preceded his signature: “Having taken part, I was an eyewitness of this battle that took place on Monday, May 5, 1862 ”(page 107)»
